The Cottage Home is a conversion of an existing Protected Structure, an old children’s orphanage, into 5 two storey townhouses with small private gardens to the rear, communal parking and gardens. The development commenced construction at the end of 2015 and was completed in 2017. Each unit is provided with communal parking for 2 cars and access to a landscaped area of open space. The new internal walls are insulated rendered walls, with lime render on the existing internal walls. All windows were refurbished or replaced with timber high performance windows. Features include gas fired stoves, top of the range finishes, kitchens and bedroom fittings. Staircases have been refurbished and retained where possible.
The houses are not BER rated but high levels of insulation, high performance windows, exterior solar panels and excellent air tightness systems were used in all the new build elements to achieve as close to an A3 rating as possible.
The site benefits from its location on Tivoli Road with Royal Terrace square to the rear of the units. Royal Terrace Square is a large urban public park and has easy access to the Dart and Dun Laoghaire harbour.
